Complications of Antisocial Personality Disorder

Complications of Antisocial Personality Disorder

Complications of Antisocial Personality Disorder

If left unmanaged, complications of antisocial personality disorder can lead to significant personal, social, and legal consequences. The disorder is associated with high rates of incarceration, substance abuse, and premature death.

1. Legal Issues

  • High likelihood of arrests, convictions, and imprisonment
  • Commonly linked with fraud, theft, assault, or domestic abuse

2. Substance Use

  • Many individuals with ASPD engage in alcohol or drug abuse
  • Substance use may worsen impulsivity and violent behaviour

3. Relationship Breakdown

  • Frequent conflict, manipulation, or abuse within families or partnerships
  • Difficulty forming or maintaining healthy personal relationships

4. Occupational Failure

  • Poor job stability due to dishonesty, aggression, or inability to follow rules
  • High rates of unemployment or frequent job changes

5. Health Risks

  • Increased risk-taking behaviour leads to:
    • Injuries
    • Infections (e.g. HIV from unsafe practices)
    • Premature death from accidents, violence, or overdose

6. Suicide and Violence

  • Some individuals engage in self-destructive behaviour
  • Higher risk of homicidal acts in extreme or untreated cases

7. Impact on Society

  • ASPD can have a major societal impact through:
    • Domestic violence
    • Financial exploitation
    • Burden on the legal and healthcare systems

Prevention and Early Intervention

  • Address conduct disorder in children before age 15
  • School-based programmes to develop empathy and conflict resolution
  • Early mental health support for at-risk youth

Though outcomes are mixed, early behavioural intervention, stable environments, and structured therapy can reduce the long-term harm of ASPD — both to the individual and those around them.
