Complications of Appendicitis

Complications of Appendicitis

Complications of Appendicitis

When appendicitis is not treated promptly, serious and life-threatening complications can occur. These highlight the importance of early diagnosis and emergency care. Let’s learn some more about the complications of appendicitis below.

1. Appendix Rupture

  • Occurs when pressure builds inside the inflamed appendix
  • Bacteria and pus spill into the abdominal cavity, causing peritonitis
  • Can lead to sepsis, a life-threatening body-wide infection

2. Peritonitis

  • Infection of the lining of the abdomen
  • Symptoms include severe pain, high fever, swollen abdomen, and shock
  • Requires immediate surgery and IV antibiotics

3. Abscess Formation

  • A pocket of pus may form near the appendix
  • Requires drainage (surgically or with a needle) and antibiotics
  • Sometimes treatment is delayed until the infection clears before removing the appendix

4. Bowel Obstruction

  • Inflammation and scarring can lead to intestinal blockage
  • May require further surgery

5. Wound Infection or Surgical Complications

  • Especially after an open appendectomy or rupture
  • Managed with antibiotics and wound care

6. Fertility Issues (Rare)

  • In females, severe infection may damage the fallopian tubes
  • Increases the risk of ectopic pregnancy or infertility

Preventing Complications

  • Seek urgent care for abdominal pain that worsens or persists
  • Don’t delay evaluation, especially in children or teens
  • Be aware that symptoms can be atypical in pregnant women and the elderly

With proper treatment, appendicitis rarely causes long-term harm. Most patients recover fully and lead normal, healthy lives.
