I was watching a talk the other day, and something the speaker said really struck me. He spoke about our tendency to focus on the bigger and grander things in life, often believing that bigger is better.
He used a simple example: if you were looking for a YouTube video on how to change your car battery, would you watch the one with 17 views or the one with 14 million views? Most of us would probably choose the latter, assuming that more views mean better content.
We often overlook the small beginnings and the tiny steps that lead to greatness.
Society almost forces us to believe that more is better. We dream of bigger houses, faster cars, larger wardrobes, and expansive kitchens.
While there’s nothing wrong with aspiring for more, this mindset can sometimes make us forget the humble beginnings from which great things often come.
A successful business, for example, starts with a simple idea—a small seed planted with hope and nurtured with effort and perseverance.
During the talk, the speaker introduced the concept of “mustard seed moments,” a term that comes from the Bible. Just as a tiny mustard seed can grow into a large, sturdy tree, our small daily actions and decisions can have a significant impact over time.
These moments might seem small, but they have great potential. He talked about how throughout our day, we can recognise these mustard seed moments.
As I was catching up with work, I began to notice these moments. Every now and then, I managed to tick something off my list, and I thought, “Hey, that’s a mustard seed moment.” It was something small, but something I could be proud of achieving.
Even if it was only replying to the emails piling up in my inbox or brainstorming, it felt good to recognise and celebrate these small achievements we often consider insignificant compared to the bigger things.
Think about the journey of personal growth or the development of a business. Every achievemnt begins with a small, often unnoticed step. Instead of fixating on the end goal, appreciate and celebrate the victories and actions that pave the way.
It’s these small, consistent efforts that build the foundation for our larger successes.
Every day, we encounter numerous small choices—“mustard seed moments,” if you will.
Choosing kindness in a moment of frustration, making decisions that align with our values, or taking a tiny step towards a big dream—all these actions contribute to our personal growth and influence the lives of those around us.
These moments might not always seem significant at the time, but they they do add up and can end up creating a big impact.
As I reflect on this idea, I realise the importance of appreciating and celebrating these “mustard seed moments.” By recognising and valuing our small actions and choices, we can appreciate our progress. And also inspire others to find meaning in their own journeys.
Let’s take a moment to remember that greatness often starts with a simple, small step.
