At Cape Oncology, we are dedicated to providing holistic and integrated care for patients diagnosed with cancer. Our aim is to offer comprehensive treatment plans, ensuring not only the best possible medical outcomes, but also addressing the emotional and psychological challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis. Understanding the impact that cancer has on both the patient and their family, we take a patient-centred approach to care, ensuring support every step of the way throughout the journey.
Dr Sarah Fairhead is a highly qualified radiation oncologist with extensive training and experience in cancer care. She completed her studies at the University of Cape Town and obtained a fellowship in Radiation Oncology, as well as her Masters in Medicine and a Diploma in Palliative Medicine. Dr Fairhead believes in the power of staying up-to-date with the latest research, which is essential for achieving optimal patient outcomes.
Having presented at numerous conferences and worked at Harvard-associated hospitals, Dr Fairhead has gained additional expertise in specialised radiotherapy techniques, immunotherapy, and targeted cancer therapies. She is also an honorary lecturer at the University of Cape Town, where she shares her knowledge with the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Dr Fairhead’s passion for holistic care means she takes time to understand her patients’ unique needs and works closely with them and their families to provide the most tailored, compassionate care. She has particular interests in breast cancer, brain tumours (both malignant and benign), as well as cancers of the gastrointestinal tract and hepatobiliary system.
At Cape Oncology, we offer a wide range of services to ensure each patient receives the most appropriate treatment. Our offerings include:
Radiotherapy plays a key role in treating cancer. By using high-energy rays, we target cancerous cells, aiming to destroy them while minimising damage to healthy tissue. Our team uses the latest radiotherapy techniques to offer personalised treatment plans for each patient.
Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a non-invasive procedure that delivers precise radiation to treat brain tumours. This technique allows for targeted treatment of tumours located in difficult-to-reach areas, providing excellent results with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
Chemotherapy is often used in combination with other treatments, such as radiotherapy or surgery. This treatment aims to destroy cancer cells throughout the body. Depending on the type and stage of cancer, chemotherapy may be administered intravenously or orally.
Immunotherapy boosts the body’s immune system to help fight cancer. By enhancing the immune response, immunotherapy helps the body recognise and attack cancer cells more effectively. This therapy is particularly effective for cancers such as melanoma, lung cancer, and others.
Targeted therapy targets specific molecules involved in the growth and spread of cancer cells. It aims to interfere with these molecules, slowing or stopping cancer progression while reducing harm to normal cells. This method can be more precise than traditional chemotherapy.
We offer specialised care for patients with lung cancer, providing personalised treatment plans that may include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or immunotherapy. Our team works together to ensure the best course of action for each patient.
At Cape Oncology, we understand that each cancer diagnosis is unique, and as such, we treat all our patients as individuals. Our patient-centred approach ensures that we address the emotional, psychological, and physical needs of those we care for. We work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team to offer a broad spectrum of treatments, from surgery to palliative care.
Dr Fairhead and her team at Cape Oncology are committed to staying at the forefront of cancer treatment by continually updating their knowledge and skills. Our patients benefit from the latest treatment options and technologies, which allow us to offer care that is not only effective but also as comfortable and supportive as possible.
