Description

Cornel Verwey | Clinical Psychologist in Brackenfell

About Cornel Verwey

Cornel Verwey is a highly qualified Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience in providing mental health support to individuals facing a range of challenges. She holds a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and completed her clinical internship at the Fort Napier Psychiatric Complex in Pietermaritzburg in 2008. Her clinical training included placements at various community clinics and Town Hill Psychiatric Hospital, offering her diverse exposure to mental health care settings.

During her community service year, Cornel managed the Northdale Hospital Psychology Clinic in Pietermaritzburg. She has since built a private practice in Brackenfell, focusing on creating a safe, compassionate, and non-judgemental space for therapy. Cornel is particularly passionate about trauma work, having previously contributed her expertise to the Trauma Centre for Survivors of Violence and Torture in Woodstock, Cape Town.

Therapeutic Approach

Cornel’s approach to therapy is primarily psychodynamic, exploring how past experiences influence present behaviours, attitudes, and emotions. She also incorporates Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness techniques when beneficial to the client.

A strong proponent of the ‘therapeutic alliance’, Cornel views therapy as an active collaboration between therapist and client. She believes that the quality of this professional relationship is a key predictor of therapy success. Her sessions offer a supportive environment where clients can explore difficult questions, address past traumas, and find new ways to manage challenges.

What to Expect from Therapy

Therapy sessions are generally 60 minutes long and take place once a week. Cornel starts with an assessment phase, where she collaborates with clients to identify their difficulties and set therapeutic goals. This phase involves gathering relevant background information to tailor the therapy process effectively.

Therapy Structure:

  • Assessment Phase: Identifying challenges and setting goals.
  • Therapeutic Phase: Working towards agreed objectives through regular sessions.
  • Flexibility: When goals are less defined, therapy may remain open-ended and adaptive.

Cornel is dedicated to providing a thoughtful and personalised therapeutic experience, ensuring clients feel heard, understood, and supported throughout their journey.
