Description

Mark Emmerich BSW (Unisa)

Specialist Addiction, Family & Couples Therapist

About

I came to the healing professions later in life, following a successful career in the financial services sector. This change was born from a calling to use my own recovery experience and passion for personal transformation to help others find their way toward health, peace and meaning.

Services

Individual, Family & Couples Therapy

Since 2009, I have worked extensively with individuals, couples and families as they navigate the difficult path from addiction and dysfunction toward recovery, growth and reconnection. I am known for creating a safe and nurturing space, where clients are able to explore their challenges without judgement and begin the process of meaningful change.

I provide therapeutic support and guidance for:

  • Substance Abuse

  • Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorders

  • Sex and Love Addiction

  • Co-dependency

  • Family Dynamics Impacted by Addiction

In addition to counselling, I conduct confidential assessments and interventions for individuals and families who are facing addiction or compulsive behavioural struggles. My aim is to assist clients and their loved ones in developing a clearer understanding of the problem, and to offer practical solutions that can support the recovery process.

Group Facilitation, Talks & Workshops

Alongside one-to-one counselling, I have extensive experience facilitating group therapy and educational talks. I regularly present on a wide range of addiction and recovery topics for:

  • Helping Professionals

  • Schools

  • Workplace Wellness Programmes

  • Community Groups

These presentations are designed to provide support, knowledge and tools both for individuals in recovery and for those who work with or care about someone affected by addiction.

My Treatment Approach

I approach therapy with curiosity, humility and respect. Recovery, in my view, is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and every individual and family faces a unique constellation of challenges. My work is therefore flexible, collaborative and client-centred.

I believe in the importance of creating a secure therapeutic alliance, where clients can speak freely, feel supported, and be met with compassion and hope.

Qualifications & Background

I have spent over nine years working in various addiction treatment centres in Cape Town, offering first-hand guidance and support to individuals at the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

Alongside my professional life, I am also a husband and father of two. My family continues to inspire me, teach me and remind me daily of the importance of humility, kindness, and connection.

Whether you are personally struggling with addiction or compulsive behaviours, or you are concerned about someone close to you, I am here to help. Healing is possible, and no one needs to walk the recovery path alone.
