Complications of Untreated Astigmatism

Complications of Untreated Astigmatism

Complications of Untreated Astigmatism

Although astigmatism is not life-threatening, untreated or poorly corrected astigmatism can significantly affect quality of life, especially in children and students. Learn more about the complications of untreated astigmatism below.

1. Blurred or Distorted Vision

  • Causes difficulty reading, driving, or focusing on screens
  • May worsen over time without correction

2. Eye Strain and Headaches

  • Squinting and prolonged visual effort can lead to:
    • Tension headaches
    • Burning eyes
    • Fatigue after visual tasks

3. Learning and Behavioural Challenges in Children

  • Vision problems can mimic learning disabilities
  • Children may avoid reading or have difficulty concentrating
  • Can affect confidence and school performance

4. Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

  • In severe or uneven astigmatism, one eye may become dominant
  • The weaker eye is suppressed, leading to permanent vision loss if not treated early
  • Most preventable if corrected by age 7

5. Driving and Safety Risks

  • Poor night vision and glare sensitivity can impair driving
  • May increase risk of road accidents, especially in adults who drive for work

6. Reduced Quality of Life

  • Struggles with daily tasks can affect self-esteem, social interaction, and productivity

Prevention and Management

  • Regular eye exams – at least every 2 years, or annually if already diagnosed
  • Proper lens use and care
  • Educating children, parents, and teachers on signs of vision problems

Astigmatism is highly manageable with early detection and the right correction method. Most people go on to have clear, comfortable vision with minimal effort.
