The precise causes and risk factors of bone cancer are often unknown, but researchers believe a combination of genetic mutations, bone cell abnormalities, and environmental exposures play a role. While many cases are sporadic, several risk factors have been identified.

1. Genetic mutations

  • DNA mutations in cells cause them to grow uncontrollably.
  • These mutations may be spontaneous or inherited.
  • Certain syndromes, like Li-Fraumeni syndrome or hereditary retinoblastoma, increase bone cancer risk.

2. Radiation exposure

  • Previous radiation therapy, particularly during childhood, increases the chance of developing osteosarcoma later in life.

3. Bone disorders

7. Chronic inflammation or injury

  • While not a direct cause, areas of chronic bone irritation or injury may, in rare instances, become cancerous.

8. Ethnicity and geography

  • Studies show Ewing sarcoma is more common in Caucasian populations, while osteosarcoma has no strong ethnic predisposition.
  • In South Africa, disparities in healthcare access often mean later-stage diagnosis, particularly in rural or low-income communities.
