Dr Henri Morkel – Anaesthesiologist – Brackenfell practices at Mediclinic Cape Gate and its Day Clinic. He earned his MBChB from Stellenbosch University in 2004, followed by his DA (SA) diploma in 2007 from the Colleges of Medicine. Moreover, he completed both an MMed (Anaesthesiology) and FCA (SA) fellowship at Stellenbosch University in 2012 Mediclinic. Consequently, he combines rigorous academic training with over a decade of full-time specialist practice.
Throughout his career, Dr Morkel has developed expertise in regional anaesthesia, neuraxial techniques, and perioperative critical care. Furthermore, he refined his skills at Cape Gate Anaesthesia—an association of specialist anaesthetists—where he has worked since 2013 . Thus, he tailors anaesthetic plans to each patient’s medical history and surgical requirements, ensuring both safety and comfort.
He contributes regularly to professional workshops and journal publications on enhanced recovery protocols and multimodal analgesia. Meanwhile, he mentors junior colleagues in simulation labs, fostering best practices in airway management and ultrasound-guided nerve blocks. As a result, his practice remains at the forefront of emerging anaesthetic techniques.
General Anaesthesia: balanced inhalational and intravenous regimens for adult and paediatric patients.
Regional Anaesthesia: ultrasound-guided nerve blocks (e.g., brachial plexus, femoral, popliteal) for targeted postoperative pain control.
Neuraxial Techniques: spinal, epidural, and combined spinal–epidural anaesthesia for orthopaedic, gynaecological, and urological surgeries.
Obstetric Anaesthesia: labour analgesia with patient-controlled epidural and combined spinal–epidural techniques to optimise maternal comfort.
Paediatric Anaesthesia: age-appropriate strategies, including inhalation inductions and multimodal analgesia, to reduce distress and nausea.
Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS): multimodal, opioid-sparing pathways designed to accelerate rehabilitation and shorten hospital stays.
Sedation & Analgesia: monitored anaesthesia care for endoscopic, interventional radiology, and minor surgical procedures.
Advanced Airway Management: video-laryngoscopy, fiberoptic bronchoscopy, and supraglottic devices for complex airway scenarios.
Perioperative Critical Care: ventilator management, haemodynamic monitoring, and point-of-care ultrasound support in the ICU setting.
Prehabilitation Consultations: assessments and guidance on fitness, nutrition, and smoking cessation to optimise surgical outcomes.
Mediclinic Cape Gate features state-of-the-art anaesthesia workstations, integrated intraoperative ultrasound, and advanced patient-monitoring systems Mediclinic. Moreover, the Day Clinic provides a streamlined environment for outpatient procedures, ensuring efficient perioperative pathways.
Dr Morkel leads a multidisciplinary team—including critical-care nurses, perfusionists, physiotherapists, and pain specialists—to coordinate perioperative and postoperative care. Consequently, patients benefit from seamless transitions between surgical, anaesthetic, and recovery phases.
He emphasises clear, compassionate communication at every step. Patients receive detailed explanations of their anaesthetic plan and postoperative expectations. Furthermore, he offers telemedicine follow-ups, which enhance accessibility for busy or remote patients. Thus, continuity of care extends beyond hospital discharge.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr Morkel contributes to regional guideline committees on perioperative pain management and participates in community-based first-aid training. He also conducts regular outcome audits, which inform continuous improvements in safety protocols.
