Steve Benton CBT Therapist Birmingham applies a humanistic foundation to his cognitive behavioural therapy work. His core profession is counselling, which guides his collaborative, client-centred approach. He works side by side with clients to understand their problems and explore workable solutions for better mental health.
Rather than following a fixed path, Steve empowers clients to define personal goals. With shared understanding, they co-create a clear treatment plan. Together, they build strategies to reduce distress and improve day-to-day functioning. Moreover, relapse prevention becomes part of this forward-looking approach.
Steve holds the position of CBT therapist and counsellor at Priory. He previously served there for two and a half years. Recently, he returned to offer flexible, sessional work up to three days a week.
In addition, Steve remains affiliated with top UK counselling and CBT organisations. He is a member of both the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).
Steve’s career began with work alongside children and adolescents in charities and schools. He then transitioned to helping adults at the Department for Work and Pensions. During that time, he trained further in CBT to enhance his effectiveness.
Moreover, he developed specialised skills through Gordon House, where he supported clients struggling with gambling addiction. His work later expanded significantly through his time at Combat Stress. There, he helped military veterans manage severe post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD).
Because of his training and experience, Steve now specialises in treating complex anxiety disorders and depression. His work spans inpatient and outpatient services, always tailored to the individual’s needs.
Steve’s academic background is extensive and relevant. He earned a CPCAB Certificate in Counselling Skills from Dudley College in 2005. In 2007, he completed a BTEC Level 5 HNC Certificate in Counselling. Then in 2009, he achieved a Postgraduate Diploma in CBT from the University of Birmingham.
Steve offers both addiction treatment and mental health treatment. His work addresses a wide range of psychological conditions, including:
Adjustment disorder
Anger management
Anxiety and phobias
Bereavement and depression
Medically unexplained symptoms (MUS)
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
PTSD and seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
Self-harm and sexual dysfunction
Each treatment plan draws from evidence-based practices tailored to the client’s unique experience.
