Noushad Mytheen Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologist Birmingham offers decades of hands-on expertise in clinical neurophysiology. From diagnostics to training, his contributions span both patient care and professional education.
Dr. Noushad Mytheen completed his National Specialist Registrar training in Clinical Neurophysiology at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in 2002. He also trained at the world-renowned National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London. Since then, he has worked as a Consultant in the field, providing critical services to patients and institutions alike.
He led the Clinical Neurophysiology Department at City Hospital, Birmingham (Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust) for 17 years. During this time, he helped build one of the region’s largest and most respected neurophysiology services. Even now, he continues part-time work at the same hospital, further enhancing the quality of care.

His daily clinical practice includes:
Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)
Electromyography (EMG) for carpal tunnel syndrome and other entrapment neuropathies
Diagnosis of peripheral neuropathies and nerve injuries
Assessment of muscle disorders including Motor Neuron Disease and muscular dystrophies
Spine-related radiculopathies causing back and neck pain
Additionally, he performs Electroencephalograms (EEGs) — routine, sleep-deprived, and prolonged — as well as Evoked Potential Studies (EPs), especially in diagnosing epilepsy and related disorders.
Dr. Mytheen’s dedication to teaching is evident in his long-standing leadership roles. From 2010 to 2022, he chaired the Clinical Neurophysiology Speciality Committee at the West Midlands Deanery. During this time, he oversaw the training and professional development of future consultants in the region.
Nationally, he served on the Specialist Advisory Training Committee with the Royal College of Physicians and was the Educational Committee Chair of the British Society of Clinical Neurophysiology from 2014 to 2021.
His research focuses on quantitative EMG, and he regularly lectures at local and regional academic events, promoting ongoing learning across the field.
