Kofi Oppong Consultant Gastroenterologist Newcastle leads the field in pancreaticobiliary medicine. With decades of experience, Dr Oppong offers exceptional care at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital. Since graduating from Southampton University Medical School in 1987, he has dedicated his career to advancing gastroenterology in the North East of England.
Dr Oppong trained extensively in gastroenterology and became a consultant in Newcastle in 1998. Over the years, he developed the tertiary pancreaticobiliary medicine service at the Freeman Hospital. Today, this service ranks among the busiest in the UK, offering the latest advanced endoscopy techniques for pancreaticobiliary conditions.
Throughout his career, He has contributed significantly to gastroenterology standards. He co-authored key British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) documents, including the EUS and ERCP service provision and training frameworks. Additionally, he helped develop the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) performance measures for EUS & ERCP.
Dr Oppong’s dedication earned him the prestigious BSG Hopkins Endoscopy Prize in 2016 for his research and innovation in pancreaticobiliary endoscopy. Furthermore, he served as the president of the Pancreatic Society of Great Britain & Ireland in 2017. His expertise also contributed to the NICE guidelines for gallstones and pancreatic cancer, influencing clinical practice nationwide.
