Dr. Nick Thompson trained extensively in London, gaining a solid foundation in gastroenterology. During his time as a research fellow at the Royal Free Hospital, he completed an MD focusing on the epidemiology of Crohn’s disease. This research provided valuable insights that continue to influence his clinical practice today. After training, he moved to the north-east as a senior registrar before becoming a Consultant in Newcastle in 1998.
Since his appointment, Dr. Thompson helped develop the Freeman Hospital as a Specialist Centre for intestinal failure. Over the past 15 years, he has contributed significantly to one of the UK’s largest groups of patients on Home Parenteral Nutrition. Furthermore, Dr. Thompson played a key role in creating the Northern Nutrition Network. This network earned the joint Shire/British Society of Gastroenterology prize for Excellence in 2012. Such achievements highlight his commitment to improving nutrition care and patient outcomes.
Dr. Nick Thompson’s expertise extends beyond clinical work. He has published extensively on clinical nutrition and inflammatory bowel disease. Between 2017 and 2019, he served as Senior Secretary of the British Society of Gastroenterology, helping shape national policies and guidelines. Within his Trust, he took on leadership roles including Clinical Director for Medicine and Associated Medical Director. His leadership helps maintain high standards of care and innovation.
