Edwin Wong Consultant Nephrologist Newcastle is a leading figure in renal medicine and rare kidney disease research. He serves at both the National Renal Complement Therapeutics Centre and the Freeman Hospital’s Renal Services Centre. In addition, he holds an academic role as an associate clinical lecturer at Newcastle University. Through his dedication and deep expertise, Dr Wong plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of nephrology in the UK.
Dr Wong leads nationally on C3 glomerulopathy (C3G), one of the most complex kidney conditions. He is responsible for implementing the national clinical commissioning policy for eculizumab use in recurrent C3G cases. Moreover, he is a valued member of the consultant team at the National aHUS Service, providing high-level care for patients with atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome.
Dr Wong’s academic training took place entirely in Newcastle. He completed a prestigious Medical Research Council Clinical Research Training Fellowship and earned a PhD in June 2016. His dedication to academic growth underpins his clinical excellence. Additionally, he continues to educate future nephrologists through his teaching role at Newcastle University.
As a researcher, Edwin Wong Consultant Nephrologist Newcastle focuses on MPGN, C3G, and aHUS. His laboratory and clinical studies earned him the Renal Association Raine Award in 2016. Currently, he is a key investigator in several NIHR portfolio studies. Notably, he acts as the UK chief investigator in two commercial studies on C3G.
Recently, his Newcastle team achieved two global milestones—first patient first visit and first patient first treatment—in both of these trials. Furthermore, Dr Wong leads ongoing research on IgA nephropathy and aHUS, strengthening Newcastle’s reputation as a renal research hub.
Beyond clinical and research excellence, Dr Wong contributes to national policy and professional development. Since 2018, he has chaired the MPGN/C3G Rare Disease Group. He also serves as the specialty group lead for renal medicine in the North East and North Cumbria region. In 2020, he was elected to the Renal Association Council, reflecting his peers’ trust and respect.
Dr Wong continues to influence renal care through collaboration, innovation, and evidence-based practice. His work ensures patients receive the best care and the latest treatments, both in Newcastle and across the UK.
