Professor Azfar Zaman has served as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital since 2001. He focuses on ischaemic heart disease, aortic stenosis, and coronary heart disease linked with diabetes. This broad expertise allows him to develop tailored treatment strategies for each patient.
Over the years, he has shaped interventional cardiology in the region. His contributions extend beyond the clinic, impacting education and research across Newcastle and the UK.
In addition to his clinical role, Professor Zaman holds the title of Honorary Clinical Professor of Cardiology at Newcastle University. Since receiving this title in 2013, he has mentored medical students, junior doctors, and researchers. Because he actively contributes to teaching, his work influences the next generation of cardiologists.
His academic background is extensive. After graduating from Leeds Medical School, he completed advanced cardiology training in Leeds, London, and Cardiff. Furthermore, his international experience includes a Fulbright Scholarship and a British Heart Foundation Fellowship. These prestigious awards took him to Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, where he focused on vascular biology.
Professor Zaman does not only practice medicine—he drives it forward. As the Clinical Lead for Coronary Intervention and Director of the Cardiac Catheter Laboratories, he implements the latest advances in cardiology. Since 2012, he has also served as the Specialty Group Lead for Cardiovascular Research.
His research focuses on atherothrombosis in diabetes and on conducting clinical trials. Because of his research leadership, patients benefit from access to cutting-edge treatments and trials not available elsewhere.
