Geoff Shenton Paediatric Haematologist Newcastle plays a crucial role in advancing care for children with leukaemia. Dr Shenton serves as the Paediatric Malignant Haematologist and Lead for Paediatric Leukaemias at the Great North Children’s Hospital. Additionally, he leads Advanced Cellular Therapies in Children and Young People. Notably, the hospital stands among only three centres in the UK delivering CAR-T therapies for paediatric leukaemia. Dr Shenton’s passion lies in delivering optimal care and standardizing treatment through clinical guidelines.
Dr Shenton began his consultant career in Leeds in 2006, heading the paediatric stem cell transplant service while managing malignant haematology. Later, in 2014, he brought his extensive experience to Newcastle, working across both bone marrow transplant (BMT) and leukaemia services. When NHS England designated Great North Children’s Hospital as a CAR-T therapy centre, Dr Shenton shifted focus from BMT to advanced cellular therapies. He then developed the CAR-T service for young people alongside his existing leukaemia responsibilities.
In Newcastle, Dr Shenton has significantly developed the leukaemia service and played a key role in restructuring paediatric haematology. He united malignant and non-malignant services within the department to improve care coordination. Moreover, he contributed as a co-author and sub-investigator on the international MyeChild01 clinical trial for acute myeloid leukaemia. His involvement extends to national efforts, including strategic work with NICE to standardize malignancy diagnosis, ensuring consistent care across the UK.
Dr Shenton remains an active member of the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) Executive committee. During the COVID pandemic, he co-authored the UK paediatric oncology guidance, which gained international recognition. Beyond clinical duties, he supports charities connected to the Great North Children’s Hospital. He serves on the Foundation Board and acts as a Trustee of Children’s Cancer North, showing deep dedication to both patient care and community support.
