Complications and Living with Binge Eating Disorder

Man holding excess abdominal fat, symbolising health complications related to binge eating disorder and weight gain.

A person gripping their abdominal fat, highlighting one of the physical manifestations of binge eating disorder—unwanted weight gain and body image issues.

Complications and Living with Binge Eating Disorder

When left untreated, BED can have serious physical, psychological, and social consequences. However, with proper support, individuals can achieve recovery and rebuild a healthy, fulfilling life. Learn more about the complications and living with binge eating disorder below.

Physical complications:

  • Weight fluctuations or obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart disease
  • Gastrointestinal issues (e.g., acid reflux, constipation)
  • Poor sleep, fatigue, or sleep apnoea
  • Joint and mobility problems

Mental health complications:

  • Depression and anxiety disorders
  • Substance use (alcohol, drugs, or laxatives)
  • Low self-esteem and body dysmorphia
  • Social isolation or withdrawal
  • Self-harm or suicidal thoughts (especially if untreated)

Social and emotional impact:

  • Difficulty forming or maintaining relationships
  • Workplace or school performance issues
  • Avoidance of meals with others or public eating
  • Constant guilt, self-blame, or internalised shame

Living with BED means navigating:

  • Daily decisions around food, emotions, and body image
  • Managing triggers (stress, loneliness, pressure)
  • Setting realistic, compassionate goals
  • Learning to listen to your body, not punish it

Positive steps in recovery:

  • Practise self-kindness: You are not your diagnosis.
  • Establish routines: Regular meals and snacks reduce impulsive bingeing.
  • Challenge food rules: There are no “good” or “bad” foods — all foods can fit in moderation.
  • Get connected: Therapy, support groups, and trusted loved ones create a healing environment.
  • Celebrate small wins: Every step — even setbacks — is part of recovery.

Complications and Living with Binge Eating Disorder

In South Africa, mental health is slowly gaining recognition. More professionals are being trained in eating disorder treatment, but stigma, affordability, and awareness gaps remain.

You are not alone. BED is real, treatable, and recovery is possible — with dignity, compassion, and support.
