Alexandra Thompson Consultant Cardiologist Newcastle brings years of experience, training, and a clear dedication to excellence in cardiac care. Based at both the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) and the Freeman Hospital, Dr Alexandra Thompson leads with a strong focus on cardiac imaging. Her expertise lies especially in cardiac echo and valvular heart disease, offering patients targeted and effective diagnostic insights.
Dr Thompson offers advanced cardiac imaging services, including trans-oesophageal echo (TOE), stress echo, and contrast echo. She provides specialist echo opinions for multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions. This work ensures that patients benefit from accurate, timely diagnoses and coordinated treatment planning. Additionally, she delivers hands-on imaging support during cardiac procedures, which enhances patient safety and care outcomes.
In addition to imaging, Alexandra Thompson Consultant Cardiologist Newcastle plays a critical role in acute general cardiology. She holds dual accreditation in both cardiology and general internal medicine. Through her role on the general cardiology on-call rota at the RVI, she ensures around-the-clock care for patients with urgent cardiovascular conditions. Dr Thompson graduated from Newcastle University in 2005. She later earned an MD with research focused on redefining heart failure and exploring the benefits of routine cardiac MRI. A fellowship at Leeds General Infirmary allowed her to deepen her understanding of congenital heart conditions across all age groups. Dr Thompson also refined her TOE skills, making her a valuable asset during complex diagnostic and interventional procedures.
Dr Thompson serves as Clinical Governance Lead for the cardiology unit at the RVI, ensuring that patient care meets the highest safety and quality standards. She also supervises multiple trainees, passing on her extensive knowledge and skills to the next generation of cardiologists. Her leadership ensures consistent development in clinical practices and ongoing improvement in patient outcomes.
