Alistair Atherton Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist Rotherham offers expert care to individuals with brain injuries and other neurological challenges. With more than 35 years of experience, Alistair brings deep knowledge, a personal approach, and a clear commitment to helping people rebuild their lives. Based in Rotherham and Sheffield, he supports adults, families, and teams through assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation.
Alistair began his career in the NHS as a psychiatric nurse. Over time, he trained as a Clinical Psychologist and became a Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist. Since then, he has worked closely with people facing complex neurological conditions. His services include assessments, reports, therapy, and advice. Moreover, he often works with couples and families to support recovery and emotional well-being.
As part of his work, Alistair builds strong links with multi-professional teams. He also helps guide care across health, legal, and social services. Because of this, his work leads to better, more joined-up support for his clients.
Alistair holds a BSc from the University of Leeds and an MSc from the University of Leicester. He also gained a Diploma in Clinical Neuropsychology and a Master’s in Psychotherapy. These qualifications support his practical work and give him a strong base in both science and therapy.
Since starting his independent practice in 2012, Alistair has worked with doctors, lawyers, insurers, case managers, and other professionals. In addition, he has completed expert witness training and is qualified to give legal opinions in complex cases.
Alistair leads clinical teams and gives supervision to other psychologists. He works with professionals in many settings to make sure services run safely and effectively. Because he values collaboration, he helps others learn and grow through training and mentoring.
He also supports NHS funders, continuing care panels, and local authorities by giving advice on care plans and best practice.
Alistair co-founded the Head Injury and Homelessness Research Group. This team includes people with lived experience of brain injury, along with professionals and researchers. Together, they aim to improve services and shine a light on the long-term impact of brain injury.
He believes that clients must have a say in their care. For that reason, he promotes co-production—where clients and professionals work together from the start.
Alistair uses a clear and focused method called neuropsychological rehabilitation. He helps people regain control, find meaning, and take part in their communities. Rather than focusing only on problems, he builds on strengths. This approach works best when clients, families, and teams all contribute.
Finally, Alistair draws on his skills as a psychodynamic psychotherapist. This helps him build deep, trusting relationships that support long-term recovery. Whether offering therapy, giving expert opinions, or guiding services, his goal remains the same—help people live full and balanced lives after brain injury.
