Alyxandra Hamilton Smith Clinical Psychologist Edinburgh helps children and young people navigate mental health challenges with compassion and evidence-based care. I understand the courage it takes to seek support, and I provide a safe, non-judgmental space where young people can explore their concerns at their own pace. By combining warmth, curiosity, and creativity, I help children and young people develop practical coping strategies that create meaningful change. I adopt a personalised approach tailored to each child’s unique needs and apply psychological concepts thoughtfully, so every young person feels heard and understood.
I use a collaborative approach to therapy. First, I build trust with the child or young person. Then, I help them explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. This approach allows children and young people to develop resilience and coping skills effectively. In every session, I focus on practical strategies, ensuring that progress is measurable and sustainable. Additionally, I value flexibility, adjusting techniques based on the child’s preferences, developmental stage, and specific challenges.
At Shore Psychology, I support children and young people experiencing a range of mental health difficulties, including anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and stress-related conditions. Furthermore, I conduct neurodevelopmental assessments for autism and ADHD. During assessments, I emphasise a strengths-based perspective, recognising both abilities and challenges. As a result, families leave with a clear understanding of the child’s needs and actionable strategies to support wellbeing.
I offer therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I deliver trauma-informed and neurodevelopmentally adapted interventions that align with best practice guidelines. Importantly, I maintain a neuro-affirming approach that values each child’s individuality. Consequently, children feel empowered to engage in therapy and apply strategies to real-life situations.
Alongside Shore Psychology, I work as a Clinical Psychologist in NHS Scotland. My experience spans CAMHS and paediatric psychological services, where I address both psychological and physical aspects of wellbeing. Additionally, I facilitate parent-led anxiety groups, provide training, and supervise multidisciplinary teams. This broad experience allows me to deliver holistic, practical, and personalised care.
I am passionate about fostering resilience and emotional growth in every child and young person I work with. I continuously apply evidence-based models and clinical expertise to ensure care remains effective and compassionate. By working together, children, young people, and families can navigate challenges confidently and create lasting, meaningful change.
