Andrew Fletcher Consultant Paediatric Haematologist Newcastle began his journey with a clear vision. An elective at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis sparked his early commitment to paediatric haematology. Although the road was long, it shaped a diverse and dynamic medical career.
After medical training in Sheffield, Manchester, and Leeds, Andrew took on three consultant roles. He first worked in adult haematology across Chesterfield and Hull. These positions allowed him to develop expertise in myeloid malignancies, teenage and young adult (TYA) care, and laboratory medicine.
Along the way, he also became deeply engaged in healthcare leadership. In Hull, he led as Clinical Director for Pathology and Infection Services. During this time, he pursued an MBA that centred on managing innovation through the lens of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The MBA experience allowed Andrew to explore how healthcare systems must evolve. His dissertation focused on defining innovation within the NHS. He explored how networks can support creativity and help spread new ideas. As the pandemic unfolded, these concepts became more urgent and applicable.
Crucially, working with the ID team during COVID reignited his passion for paediatrics. This career shift brought him to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where he expanded non-malignant and consultative services.
Now based in Newcastle, Andrew integrates his wide-ranging experience to develop systems that benefit children and young people. He thrives on the complexity of lab-based diagnostics and multidisciplinary care. Moreover, the collaborative energy in the Northeast offers unlimited opportunities to enhance services for families.
Andrew connects teams, departments, and disciplines with ease. His ability to align clinical needs with systemic improvements defines his current role. The Northeast is a growing hub for forward-thinking healthcare, and Andrew is excited to contribute meaningfully.
