Andrew Gennery Consultant Paediatric Newcastle brings world-class expertise in Paediatric Immunology and Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation. As an Honorary Consultant at the Great North Children’s Hospital and a Professor at Newcastle University, Professor Gennery has dedicated his career to advancing the treatment and research of primary immunodeficiencies.
His clinical journey began in Newcastle and continued in London, followed by post-doctoral studies in Paris. There, he worked with renowned scientists Anne Durandy and Alain Fischer at Necker Hospital. His time in Paris helped shape his deep understanding of immune disorders, eventually leading to the discovery of Cytidine Deaminase, a key gene in immune system development.
Professor Gennery’s contributions extend beyond Newcastle. He has held leadership roles in prestigious organisations like ESID and EBMT. Notably, he chaired the ESID/EBMT Inborn Errors Working Party and the Clinical Working Party. He currently co-chairs the North American CIBMTR committee for Primary Immune Deficiencies and serves as paediatric lead for the UKPID Registry.
His impact also includes writing international guidelines for treating DNA repair disorders and CD40 ligand deficiency. In addition, he developed conditioning protocols for transplant patients with immunodeficiencies and guidelines for using extracorporeal photopheresis in managing graft versus host disease.
Professor Gennery’s academic portfolio is vast. He has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and contributed chapters to major medical textbooks. As a key opinion leader, he edits for several medical journals, including Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases, Frontiers in Immunology, and the Journal of Clinical Immunology.
His ongoing research explores immune recovery after haematopoietic stem cell transplants. He studies the long-term outcomes of transplant patients and investigates complications following HSCT. His interests also include DNA repair disorders and strategies to induce immune tolerance. So far, he has supervised over 25 doctoral students, mentoring the next generation of immunology experts.
Beyond the lab and clinic, Professor Gennery’s influence reaches public health initiatives. He works with Public Health England to introduce newborn screening for Severe Combined Immunodeficiencies (SCID), a vital step in early detection and treatment.
Furthermore, he serves as the Human Tissue Authority Designated Individual in Newcastle, ensuring ethical and safe therapeutic tissue use.
Professor Andrew Gennery continues to drive innovation in paediatric immunology, putting Andrew Gennery Consultant Paediatric Newcastle at the forefront of excellence in the UK and globally.
