Anja Muehlschlegel Consultant Psychiatrist Kent has supported young people for over 25 years. With deep expertise in both psychiatry and psychotherapy, Dr Muehlschlegel brings a thoughtful, well-rounded approach to mental health care. Her career spans top institutions in Germany and the UK, where she completed rigorous medical and specialist training.
Dr Muehlschlegel began her medical journey in Berlin, studying at one of Germany’s most prestigious universities. She followed this with advanced psychiatric training at the University of Wuerzburg and later in London at St George’s and Guys and St Thomas’ training schemes. With over 17 years in NHS CAMHS, she has led teams and delivered care across general mental health and eating disorder services.
In Luxembourg, she served as clinical lead for an inpatient adolescent psychiatric service. This role strengthened her skill in supporting youth and families through acute and complex challenges.
She offers care for many conditions, including depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, autism, and eating disorders. Notably, Dr Muehlschlegel tailors each treatment plan to the unique needs of every young person. She also helps with more specific issues like sleep disorders, adjustment difficulties, phobias, and PTSD.
Her approach is comprehensive. Where possible, she starts with psychological therapies, and integrates medication only when necessary. This balance of methods leads to thoughtful, personalised care.
Dr Muehlschlegel holds advanced training in psychodynamic therapy, CBT, enhanced CBT (CBT-E), EMDR, multifamily therapy, and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT). She also completed the British Association for Psychopharmacology’s clinical certificate, underscoring her safe and informed use of medications in young people under 18.
This combination of skills allows her to deliver truly integrated care. She understands that recovery requires more than one method—it demands flexibility, compassion, and experience.
In addition to her therapeutic work, Dr Muehlschlegel is highly skilled in neurodevelopmental assessments. She regularly supports families navigating ADHD and autism diagnoses, offering clarity and next steps in what can often feel like an overwhelming process.
Dr Muehlschlegel speaks English, German, and French (C1). Her multilingual abilities and diverse experience enable her to connect with patients from many backgrounds. This makes her especially effective in understanding complex family dynamics and cultural perspectives.
