Anne Burdess Consultant Vascular Surgeon Newcastle brings extensive experience and expertise to aortic aneurysm care. She specialises in both open and endovascular repair of complex aortic aneurysms. Dr Burdess offers each patient advanced treatment, clinical excellence, and a deeply personal commitment to care.
Dr Burdess graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2000. She achieved both an MB ChB and an intercalated honours degree in Physiology, marking her academic success early. Her surgical training took place on the South East of Scotland Basic and Higher Surgical Rotations.
Importantly, during her training, Dr Burdess built a unique alliance between the surgical and cardiovascular science departments. This collaboration led to her PhD and later established a lasting research pathway for future vascular surgeons. As a result, the programme continues to attract significant grant funding.
Dr Burdess regularly presents at national and international conferences. Furthermore, she plays a growing role in European Vascular Society training workshops and exam development.
She enhanced her endovascular skills at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle and through a BSET fellowship at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. In 2018, she completed the prestigious post-CCT Complex Aortic International Fellowship at Uppsala University Hospital in Sweden.
Since joining her current team, Dr Burdess has become a key member of Newcastle’s Complex Aortic unit. She works across departments to improve every aspect of the patient journey—from diagnosis through to recovery.
She continues to lead the development of the TAAA programme, partnering with the Cardiothoracic Directorate. Together, they strengthen Newcastle’s reputation as a centre of clinical excellence for aortic care.
Her research focuses on cardiovascular risk, aortic strategy, and patient outcomes. These studies directly improve clinical practice.
Beyond the hospital, Dr Burdess enjoys time with her children, Dylan and Phoebe. Whether surfing in the North Sea or hiking in the mountains, she embraces life with energy and balance.
