Bas Sen Consultant Physician Emergency Medicine Newcastle leads with over three decades of experience in emergency medicine. He currently serves at the Royal Victoria Infirmary's Great North Trauma and Emergency Centre (GNTEC), where he focuses on haemorrhagic shock in trauma, flows and streaming in emergency medicine, telemedicine, and medical management. His work ensures patients receive timely and effective care in critical situations.
Mr Bas Sen qualified in 1980 in India and began his medical career in England in 1984. Between 1984 and 1988, he completed general professional training in Manchester. He moved to Newcastle in 1988 to complete his specialist training in Emergency Medicine. During this time, he gained international experience as a Senior Registrar in Trauma Centres in Toronto, including the renowned Sunnybrook Trauma Centre.
In June 1993, Mr Sen became a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. He took on the role of Head of Department in 1994 and later became Clinical Director of Medicine in 2011. He now serves as Associate Medical Director for the Royal Victoria Infirmary, appointed in April 2015. His responsibilities focus on Major Trauma, Emergency Medicine, and Acute Medicine. Consequently, he shapes both clinical care and hospital-wide medical strategies.
Mr Sen has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, covering topics commonly encountered in daily Emergency Medicine practice. His research emphasizes practical, evidence-based approaches that improve patient outcomes. Moreover, his contributions continue to influence both national and international emergency care protocols.
Mr Sen continues to practise as a full-time clinician at the RVI Emergency Department, a Level 1 Major Trauma Centre. He thrives on treating critically ill patients and improving emergency care pathways. Furthermore, he envisions expanding the Major Trauma Centre and developing integrated pathways for acute, time-critical emergencies, such as strokes, haemorrhage, and acute coronary syndromes. His proactive approach ensures patients receive rapid and coordinated care.
