Description

Candice Wakelin | Clinical Psychologist – Gardens, Cape Town

About Me

Hi, I’m Candice, a clinical psychologist based in Gardens, Cape Town. I have a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of the Western Cape, where I conducted research focused on the most effective treatments for adult ADHD. My professional journey has provided me with a broad range of experience working with individuals from various backgrounds, which has shaped my approach to therapy.

I completed my internship at Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital, which gave me invaluable experience working with a diverse array of psychological conditions. I also worked in schools with children and adolescents struggling with anxiety, depression, and other emotional difficulties. Additionally, I completed my community service year at Pollsmoor Correctional Services, where I further honed my skills in dealing with complex mental health issues in an institutional setting.

Before becoming a clinical psychologist, I worked as a school counsellor, specialising in supporting traumatised, bereaved, and anxious children. This foundational experience continues to influence my work, as I am deeply committed to helping individuals navigate their mental health challenges.

Services Offered

I provide psychotherapy to individuals dealing with a range of psychological issues, from mood disorders to trauma-related challenges. My practice is rooted in a client-centred approach, and I work collaboratively with clients to explore their concerns and work towards meaningful change. I also offer a safe, confidential space for individuals to discuss their difficulties and gain insight into their emotional and psychological worlds.

Individual Therapy for Adults and Adolescents

I offer therapy for both adults and adolescents dealing with various psychological conditions. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, mood swings, or other emotional difficulties, therapy can provide a space for you to work through your challenges. I utilise evidence-based therapeutic approaches tailored to meet the unique needs of each client.

Mood Disorders (Depression & Bipolar Disorder)

I have a specific interest in treating mood disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder. Therapy can help individuals gain better emotional regulation, understand the triggers of their mood episodes, and develop coping strategies for managing their mental health effectively. Through a combination of therapeutic modalities, I work with clients to enhance self-awareness and improve their emotional well-being.

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety can be debilitating and isolating, but it is treatable with the right therapeutic intervention. I offer therapy for individuals with various anxiety disorders, such as generalised anxiety, panic disorder, and social anxiety. Together, we can explore the root causes of anxiety and work on techniques to reduce and manage these feelings.

Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ADHD & Autism)

I specialise in working with individuals who have neurodevelopmental disorders, such as ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Therapy for these conditions focuses on developing coping mechanisms, improving social skills, and managing the emotional challenges associated with these diagnoses. I use an integrative approach to support clients in understanding their unique needs and strengths.

Psychotic Disorders

I offer support for individuals dealing with psychotic disorders, providing therapy that helps clients understand and manage their symptoms. My approach includes psychoeducation and therapy aimed at reducing distress and improving functioning.

Trauma and Trauma-Related Disorders

Having worked with traumatised children and adults, I am particularly sensitive to the impact of trauma on mental health. Therapy can help individuals process past trauma, reduce the emotional burden, and develop healthier coping mechanisms.
