Founder and head physiotherapist Athene Irving has been practising physiotherapy since 1999. Graduating from the University of Stellenbosch, Athene further honed her expertise in the UK, where she worked in both acute and sub-acute hospital settings. Specialising in neurological rehabilitation, she returned to Cape Town to join the Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre, treating patients with conditions like spinal cord injuries and stroke. Athene earned her Masters in Physiotherapy from the University of Cape Town in 2020, with a focus on vestibular rehabilitation.
With a BSc in Physiotherapy from UCT, Candice Murray brings a passion for neuro-rehabilitation to the team. Following her community service at Frere Tertiary Hospital, Candice pursued further studies and received a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Neuro-Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy from Wits University in 2022. Candice is committed to helping clients regain independence and function, especially in cases of neurological, orthopaedic, and sports injuries.
A seasoned physiotherapist, Marian Wills holds a BSc in Physiotherapy from Pretoria University and has further specialised in Exercise Science and Orthopaedic Physiotherapy. Marian’s approach blends traditional physiotherapy with techniques such as Yoga and Pilates, helping patients recover from musculoskeletal issues. Marian’s expertise allows her to combine movement therapy with rehabilitation, ensuring patients enjoy holistic recovery.
Katie Pretorius graduated from UCT in 2017 with honours in Physiotherapy. She developed a strong interest in neurological and orthopaedic rehabilitation during her time at Vincent Pallotti Rehabilitation Centre. Katie’s compassionate approach and commitment to improving the lives of her patients ensure that everyone receives the support needed for a successful recovery.
Nicky Talbot, a specialist in neurological rehabilitation, has extensive experience working with patients suffering from conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and vestibular disorders. At Athene Irving Physiotherapists, we offer a comprehensive range of services aimed at rehabilitating patients and enhancing their quality of life. We focus on neurological, orthopaedic, and sports rehabilitation, along with Pilates and respiratory care. Our services are tailored to each individual’s specific needs to ensure effective, personalised recovery.
We offer neurological physiotherapy for patients with conditions such as stroke, brain injuries, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and balance disorders. Our approach combines manual therapy, exercise, and education to help patients regain functional independence and improve quality of life. Family involvement is central to the process, with regular updates and collaborative treatment plans.
Our vestibular rehabilitation programme is designed to address issues like dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance. By using targeted exercises, we work to reduce symptoms, improve balance, and restore your ability to engage in daily activities like walking and driving. We collaborate with ENT specialists and audiologists to ensure a holistic approach to vestibular disorders.
We treat conditions such as back pain, neck pain, and injuries to the shoulders, knees, and ankles. Whether you’re recovering from a sports injury or a joint replacement, we provide tailored physiotherapy programmes to accelerate recovery.
For our older adult patients, we offer rehabilitation services that enhance mobility, prevent falls, and maintain independence. We provide fall risk assessments, develop personalised balance training programmes, and work with families and caregivers to create safe, supportive care plans for those with age-related challenges.
Our Pilates sessions are an integral part of rehabilitation for musculoskeletal dysfunction. Using breathing techniques and movement patterns, Pilates helps restore posture, improve muscular balance, and reduce pain.
For individuals with respiratory conditions such as COPD or those recovering from surgery, we provide breathing pattern therapy and airway clearance techniques. These treatments aim to improve lung function and ease symptoms like breathlessness.
Whether you’re an athlete or someone dealing with a sports-related injury, we provide sports physiotherapy that focuses on muscle, ligament, and tendon injuries. Our goal is to speed up recovery, ensure proper healing, and help prevent future injuries, allowing athletes to return to peak performance.
We offer home visits for those who are unable to attend the practice. Whether you are recovering from surgery or experiencing mobility challenges, our physiotherapists will visit you in your home to provide tailored care that meets your needs. Our home visit services are available throughout the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town.
