CENTER OF MOLECULAR IMAGING AND THERANOSTICS
Description
CENTER OF MOLECULAR IMAGING AND THERANOSTICS, Moreleta Park
About
The Center of Molecular Imaging and Theranostics (CoMIT), located in Moreleta Park, leads the way in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging in South Africa. We probe deep into the body’s inner workings to reveal essential cellular and molecular activities. Consequently, our advanced imaging techniques help detect diseases early, select optimal therapies, and monitor treatment responses. Moreover, our proactive approach transforms conventional diagnostics into personalized care that truly matters.
CoMIT champions a transformative mission by offering training platforms for newly qualified nuclear physicians from previously disadvantaged communities. Furthermore, the center earns accreditation from the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) to train radiographers in nuclear medicine. Over the past five years, we have successfully trained nearly 13 radiographers. Therefore, we demonstrate an unwavering commitment to education and skill development while consistently enhancing patient outcomes.
Services
At CoMIT, we provide a comprehensive suite of diagnostic and theranostic services using state-of-the-art technology. We use advanced equipment like gamma cameras, SPECT, and PET scanners to capture detailed images of organ function and cellular activity. Our services include:
- Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scans: We employ radiotracers like FDG to assess cancer recurrence and evaluate therapy effectiveness.
- Bone Scans: We evaluate osteoblast activity to detect cancers, infections, and inflammations affecting the bones.
- DATSCAN: We assess the basal ganglia in the brain to aid in diagnosing and planning treatments for tremors.
- DMSA Scan: We focus on the kidneys to detect scarring following urinary tract infections.
- Gastric Emptying Study: We determine the rate at which the stomach empties, which is essential for diagnosing gastrointestinal conditions.
- GFR Renal Function Test: We measure the kidneys’ filtration rate to guide appropriate treatment decisions.
- HIDA Scan: We evaluate the liver and gallbladder’s function to diagnose biliary conditions.
- Lacrimal Scan: We identify blockages in the tear ducts to address issues related to eye health.
- Meckel’s Scan: We detect active gastric mucosa in the intestines to identify sources of gastrointestinal bleeding.
- MIBG Scan: We localize abnormal tissues and tumors associated with the neuroendocrine system.
- Parathyroid Scan: We locate hyper-functioning parathyroid glands to assist in diagnosing related disorders.
- Renogram: We assess kidney function by evaluating perfusion, uptake, concentration, and radiotracer excretion.
- Sentinel Node Scan: We identify the first lymph node(s) from a primary tumor to guide targeted surgical removal.
- Thyroid Scan: We evaluate thyroid gland function and assess the significance of thyroid nodules.
- Lung VQ Scan: We examine the air and blood supply to the lungs to determine the likelihood of pulmonary embolism.
Each service is tailored to meet individual patient needs, ensuring compassionate and effective care throughout your diagnostic journey.
