About Cranial Kids

Cranial Kids focuses on the orthotic treatment of head shape deformities in infants. We provide expert clinical assessments, classify cranial conditions, and offer tailored treatment advice. Our goal is to guide parents through the process with clarity and care.

Malcolm Freedman and Charne Schoeman lead our practice. Both are registered Orthotists and Prosthetists with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). They have a special interest in treating cranial asymmetry and are highly trained in the use of cranial remoulding orthoses. Their dedication ensures that each child receives personalised, expert care.

Individual Assessments and Diagnosis

We begin by assessing the shape and symmetry of your baby’s head. After identifying the specific cranial deformation, we determine its severity. Then, we recommend the most effective treatment. During this process, we answer your questions and help you understand every step.

STARband Cranial Remoulding Orthoses

We use the STARband cranial remoulding orthosis, which gently encourages the head to grow into a more symmetrical shape. Both Malcolm and Charne are accredited by Orthomerica to measure and fit the STARband device. Unlike passive methods, the STARband offers active reshaping, making early intervention essential for optimal results.

Ongoing Monitoring and Adjustments

As your baby grows, we schedule regular follow-ups. These visits allow us to monitor changes and adjust the helmet as needed. This approach ensures consistent progress throughout the treatment. Additionally, we make sure that your child remains comfortable at every stage.
