David Nylander Consultant Gastroenterologist Newcastle has dedicated his career to advancing digestive health and endoscopic innovation. He brings over three decades of medical expertise, combining clinical excellence with compassionate care. After graduating from Newcastle University in 1988, he began training in internal medicine before specialising in gastroenterology.
Dr Nylander’s medical journey began in the Northern Region. There, he developed foundational skills in general medicine and progressed into specialised gastroenterology. In 1999, he accepted a Consultant position at City Hospitals Sunderland. This role allowed him to establish and expand a therapeutic endoscopy service, setting the stage for future advancements.
In 2012, Dr Nylander joined Newcastle Hospitals. Since then, he has driven innovation in therapeutic endoscopy. He was appointed Director of Endoscopy in 2016. Under his leadership, Newcastle’s endoscopy services underwent modernisation. These changes significantly improved patient outcomes and clinical efficiency.
Dr Nylander also plays a crucial role in cancer prevention. He serves as Clinical Director of the North of Tyne Bowel Screening Program, a partnership between Newcastle and Northumbria NHS Trusts. This program helps detect colon cancer early in a region serving over 800,000 people. Furthermore, he leads the Barrett’s oesophagus service in the region, offering radiofrequency ablation to improve patient care.
In addition to his clinical roles, Dr Nylander is an educator. He is part of the National Faculty of Endoscopy Trainers, contributing to national training efforts. He has helped design training programs on removing colon polyps and managing gastrointestinal bleeding. These courses help other doctors improve skills and confidence in complex procedures.
Dr Nylander’s dedication extends beyond the UK. He was awarded an MBE for his services to health both in Sierra Leone and the United Kingdom. This honour reflects his commitment to making a global impact.
