Dr Bernard Wolff – Ophthalmologist – Randburg practices at the Specialist Eye Centre in Randburg and serves as Director of the Retina Surgery Centre in Northcliff Office Park. He earned his MBChB (Pretoria) and MMed (Pretoria) degrees from the University of Pretoria, followed by FC Ophth (SA) certification from the College of Ophthalmologists of South Africa . He then completed a prestigious Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, Australia .
Early in his career, Dr Wolff served on faculty at the European VitreoRetinal Training School in Bremen, Germany, where he trained emerging retinal surgeons until 2020 . He began practicing as a medical officer at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, managing complex anterior and posterior segment disorders. Since founding the Retina Surgery Centre in 2012, he has focused exclusively on vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina, and cataract surgery . Consequently, his expertise spans both surgical and non-surgical management of retinal diseases, ensuring optimal outcomes for patients with a wide range of conditions.
Dr Wolff delivers a comprehensive suite of specialized eye care services, each supported by cutting-edge technology and personalized care plans:
Vitreoretinal Surgery for complex retinal conditions, including retinal detachment repair, macular hole surgery, and epiretinal membrane peeling, using 27-gauge microsurgical instrumentation and intraoperative OCT guidance .
Medical Retina Care for diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and retinal vein occlusions, employing intravitreal injections (anti-VEGF, steroids) and laser photocoagulation, guided by Spectral-Domain OCT for timely intervention .
Cataract Surgery utilizing phacoemulsification with multifocal and toric intraocular lens implants, enhanced by intraoperative aberrometry to verify lens power and alignment in real time .
Corneal Services, including keratoconus cross-linking (riboflavin and ultraviolet light protocol) to halt disease progression, and corneal transplantation (penetrating keratoplasty and lamellar grafts) using advanced suturing techniques and femtosecond laser–assisted trephination .
Glaucoma Screening and Management with tonometry, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), and visual field testing for early detection; offering minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) procedures—i-Stent, XeN—as well as traditional filtering surgeries (Express valve, Ahmed valve) .
Advanced Diagnostic Imaging using Spectral-Domain OCT, digital fluorescein angiography, and ultrasound biomicroscopy for precise evaluation, treatment planning, and ongoing monitoring of anterior and posterior segment conditions .
General Ophthalmology covering comprehensive eye examinations, glaucoma screening, and dry eye management to address common concerns and detect emerging issues early .
Every procedure is performed in a modern theatre complex equipped with laminar-flow operating rooms, on-site Excimer Laser, and real-time imaging systems. Consequently, patients receive efficient, safe care under Dr Wolff’s expert guidance. Schedule a consultation today.
The Specialist Eye Centre in Randburg features a state-of-the-art theatre complex compliant with national and international regulatory standards . A dedicated Excimer Laser suite allows for precise refractive surgery and keratoconus cross-linking under optimal conditions . In addition, high-resolution SD-OCT and digital fluorescein angiography systems facilitate early detection of retinal, corneal, and glaucoma pathologies, thereby improving clinical outcomes . Multiple laminar-flow operating rooms enable simultaneous advanced procedures, minimizing wait times and optimizing surgical efficiency.
Dr Wolff actively participates in clinical research, serving as Principal Investigator on trials exploring novel retinal implants, advanced anti-VEGF therapies, and minimally invasive vitreoretinal techniques . He also mentors trainees through the European VitreoRetinal Training School and local fellowship programs, fostering the next generation of surgeons. Moreover, he collaborates closely with a multidisciplinary team—including retinal specialists, glaucoma experts, cornea surgeons, and optometrists—to ensure seamless continuity of care from initial evaluation through postoperative follow-up.
