About Dr John Steer

Dr Steer’s medical journey began at the University of Cape Town, where he earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree. His early training took place at the world-famous Groote Schuur Hospital, where he worked during the era of Professor Chris Barnard’s first heart transplant.

His specialist training continued in London, where he trained under Sir Donald Harrison at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital, one of the most prestigious ENT and Head & Neck units in the UK. After obtaining his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (London), he returned to Groote Schuur Hospital as a Specialist ENT Surgeon before establishing his private practice in Cape Town.

Throughout his career, Dr Steer has held numerous leadership roles within the Society of Ear, Nose, Throat and Head & Neck Surgeons and the South African Medical Association. His contributions to medicine have been recognised with awards from both national and international medical bodies.
