Dr Kevin Grunewald – Specialist Anaesthetist – Brackenfell practices at Mediclinic Cape Gate, where he leads expert perioperative care. He earned his MBChB from Stellenbosch University in 2010 and went on to complete his DA (SA) diplomate in 2014, followed by FCA (SA) fellowship certification in 2021. Moreover, he was awarded an MMed (Anaesthesiology) from the University of Cape Town in 2021 . During his training, he developed key interests in regional anaesthesia, obstetric anaesthesia, and neuro-anaesthesia, ensuring a well-rounded skill set for diverse surgical specialties .
Furthermore, Dr Grunewald has practised full-time in anaesthesiology since 2013, integrating evidence-based protocols into every case. Consequently, he excels in tailoring anaesthetic plans to individual patient needs, whether for routine procedures or high-risk operations. He remains active in professional societies and contributes to local guideline development, thereby shaping standards of care across Southern Africa capegateanaesthesia.co.za.
General Anaesthesia: administering balanced inhalational and intravenous techniques for adult and paediatric populations.
Regional Anaesthesia: performing ultrasound-guided nerve blocks—including brachial plexus, femoral, and popliteal approaches—for targeted pain relief.
Neuraxial Techniques: offering spinal, epidural, and combined spinal–epidural anaesthesia for orthopaedic, urological, and gynaecological surgeries.
Obstetric Anaesthesia: providing labour analgesia with patient-controlled epidural and combined spinal–epidural methods to optimise comfort and safety.
Neuro-Anaesthesia: managing anaesthesia for craniotomies and spinal procedures, with emphasis on cerebral perfusion and intracranial pressure control.
Paediatric Anaesthesia: employing age-appropriate inhalation inductions and multimodal analgesia to minimise postoperative nausea and distress.
Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS): implementing opioid-sparing, multimodal pain-control pathways to accelerate rehabilitation and reduce hospital stays.
Sedation & Analgesia: delivering monitored anaesthesia care for endoscopic, interventional-radiology, and pain-management procedures.
Advanced Airway Management: mastering video-laryngoscopy, fiberoptic bronchoscopy, and supraglottic devices for difficult-airway scenarios.
Critical-Care Support: providing ventilator management, haemodynamic monitoring, and sedation protocols in intensive-care settings.
Each service employs state-of-the-art monitoring systems, high-flow oxygen delivery, and a fully digital record-keeping workflow to ensure safety and precision .
Mediclinic Cape Gate Day Clinic opened in September 2020 and forms part of Cape Gate Anaesthesia, an association of specialist anaesthetists established in 2010 . Moreover, the hospital features modern anaesthesia workstations, intraoperative ultrasound, and integrated patient-monitoring platforms, which support Dr Grunewald’s comprehensive care approach.
Consequently, he leads a multidisciplinary team—including critical-care nurses, perfusionists, and physiotherapists—to coordinate perioperative planning and postoperative rehabilitation. He emphasises clear, compassionate communication, explaining each stage of the anaesthetic plan and addressing concerns proactively. Furthermore, he offers prehabilitation consultations to optimise fitness, nutrition, and smoking-cessation efforts before major surgery, thereby reducing complications and improving outcomes.
Dr Grunewald also contributes to peer-reviewed research on airway-management training, having co-authored a systematic review that highlights the value of deliberate practice and simulation in building expertise. Meanwhile, he mentors junior colleagues in simulation labs and case reviews, fostering the next generation of anaesthesia professionals.
