Dr Lize Viljoen is an Anaesthesiologist practising at Mediclinic Cape Gate Hospital and its Day Clinic in Brackenfell Mediclinic. Moreover, she combines over two decades of perioperative expertise with critical-care support in a busy ICU setting. She earned her MBChB from the University of the Free State in 1998, followed by the DA (SA) diploma in Anaesthesia in 2005. Subsequently, she was admitted as a Fellow of the College of Anaesthesiologists (FCA SA) in 2008, underscoring her commitment to the highest professional standards Mediclinic.
During her early career, Dr Viljoen completed internship and community service in both rural and urban hospitals, where she developed a passion for patient-centred anaesthesia. Consequently, she joined Cape Gate Anaesthetists in 2011, serving both the main hospital and its day-procedure unit. Outside clinical duties, she leads community workshops on perioperative safety and volunteers in sedation clinics for underserved patients. Meanwhile, she sustains her resilience and focus through trail running and bird watching, pursuits that sharpen her attention to detail under pressure.
Dr Viljoen offers a comprehensive suite of anaesthesia and pain-management services, each delivered with precision and empathy:
Pre-operative Assessment – thorough review of medical history, risk stratification, and optimization plans to ensure patient safety and reduce complications.
General Anaesthesia – modern inhalational and intravenous protocols tailored to adults and paediatric populations for smooth induction and emergence.
Regional Anaesthesia – ultrasound-guided spinal, epidural, and peripheral nerve blocks that provide targeted pain relief while preserving motor function.
Conscious Sedation – intravenous regimens using midazolam and fentanyl for day-case procedures, endoscopy, and minor surgeries with rapid recovery.
Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA) – target-controlled infusions of propofol and remifentanil designed to minimize postoperative nausea and expedite discharge.
Obstetric Anaesthesia – epidural, combined spinal-epidural, and spinal techniques for labour analgesia and Caesarean sections, prioritizing maternal and fetal well-being.
Paediatric Anaesthesia – age-appropriate dosing, specialized monitoring, and child-friendly protocols to reduce anxiety in young patients.
ICU Sedation & Analgesia – ventilator-associated sedation, continuous infusion pain protocols, and daily sedation-weaning plans for critically ill patients.
Perioperative Pain Management – multimodal analgesia including patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pumps and regional infusion catheters for acute and chronic pain.
Advanced Airway Management – fiberoptic intubation, video laryngoscopy, and rapid-sequence induction techniques for challenging airways.
Perioperative Trans-oesophageal Echocardiography – real-time cardiac imaging to guide hemodynamic management in high-risk surgeries.
Each service leverages state-of-the-art anaesthesia machines, ultrasound guidance, and rigorous safety protocols to balance comfort with optimal outcomes.
Mediclinic Cape Gate features dedicated operating theatres equipped with the latest ventilators, multimodal monitoring systems, and a day-case sedation suite. Furthermore, the hospital enforces Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols to shorten length of stay and accelerate rehabilitation.
