Dr Maarten Potgieter, an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Stellenbosch, earned his MBChB from the University of the Free State in 2007. He then completed his MMed in Orthopaedics and Fellowship of the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons (FC Orth SA) at Stellenbosch University in 2018. Since joining Mediclinic Winelands Orthopaedic Day Clinic in 2022, he has led the Acute Spinal Cord Affliction Unit, which provides rapid multidisciplinary care for spinal injuries. Moreover, he re‑established the spinal service at Livingstone Academic Hospital and managed endemic spinal tuberculosis before joining the Institute of Orthopaedics and Rheumatology. Furthermore, he honed advanced techniques during an IGASS Spine fellowship under Dr Johan Davis, ensuring that patients benefit from evidence‑based, minimally invasive approaches. Consequently, his practice blends global expertise with local needs, while he continues to mentor registrars and contribute to academic research. Additionally, he presents regularly at national seminars, so the clinic stays at the forefront of spinal surgery innovations.
Dr Potgieter offers a specialised range of spine procedures designed for optimal neurological outcomes and rapid recovery:
Microdiscectomy and decompression for herniated and degenerative discs
Spinal fusion and stabilization using minimally invasive and open techniques
Correction of spinal deformities such as scoliosis and kyphosis
Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty for osteoporotic compression fractures
Spinal tumour and infection management, including debridement and reconstruction
Trauma surgery for spinal fractures with percutaneous fixation devices
Paediatric spine surgery for congenital and acquired conditions
Acute spinal cord affliction protocols, offering rapid multidisciplinary intervention
Each service follows structured, evidence‑based pathways. Furthermore, Dr Potgieter emphasises patient education and shared decision‑making to ensure clear expectations. Moreover, prehabilitation plans prepare patients physically and mentally, which minimises complications and accelerates functional recovery.
The Day Clinic features C‑arm fluoroscopy and intraoperative neuromonitoring systems that guide precision spine surgery. In addition, 3D imaging protocols inform preoperative planning, thereby reducing operative time and enhancing safety. A dedicated acute spinal cord affliction unit enables same‑day admission and discharge for minor cases, while ensuring critical treatments occur without delay. Consequently, patients experience streamlined care pathways that prioritise both speed and quality.
Moreover, the on‑site physiotherapy suite offers anti‑gravity treadmills and Cybex strength‑testing machines to support early mobilisation and rehabilitation. Additionally, a specialised nursing team conducts daily multidisciplinary rounds—including orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthesiologists, critical care specialists, and physiotherapists—to tailor postoperative plans. Therefore, each patient’s journey remains cohesive and closely monitored.
Dr Potgieter also hosts community seminars on spinal health and recovery strategies, reflecting his commitment to holistic well‑being. Finally, Schedule a consultation today to discuss your spinal care plan with Dr Maarten Potgieter.
