Dr Nicky Kalk Consultant Psychiatrists London represents the pinnacle of experience in both addiction and general psychiatry. Dr Kalk is a Consultant Psychiatrist in Addictions at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. She also serves as a Visiting Senior Lecturer in Addiction Psychiatry at King’s College London.
Dr Kalk’s training journey began as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Bristol. She then advanced to Imperial College London, where she completed a Wellcome Trust GSK Translational Medicine Training Fellowship and earned her PhD in Addiction Psychiatry. After that, she moved to the prestigious Maudsley Training Scheme, gaining diverse experience across both inpatient and community psychiatry.
Throughout her career, Dr Kalk has worked with complex and co-occurring mental health conditions. These include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and psychosis. She has a strong focus on patients who struggle with both substance use and mental illness. In addition, she provides prescribing support for individuals facing physical health challenges like liver disease.
Her NHS role places her at the forefront of emergency and inpatient care. She consults in the emergency department and across the wards at King’s College Hospital. Notably, she co-founded the Integrated Liver Clinic alongside Dr Naina Shah. Here, she offers vital mental health support to patients with alcohol-related liver disease.
Dr Kalk values clinical education and continuous learning. She holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice in Higher Education from King’s College London. Her dedication to teaching is evident through her work with undergraduate and postgraduate students. She lectures across the medical school and on the MSc. in Addictions course.
She also holds a Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy, underlining her commitment to academic excellence.
As a research-active psychiatrist, Dr Kalk contributes to several major studies. These include NIHR’s D-SITAR and ProACTIVE projects. She supports additional research through the Maudsley BRC Addictions stream. Her areas of interest include the implementation of integrated care pathways and the intersection of psychiatric crisis and substance use. Moreover, she actively studies trends in drug-related deaths.
To maintain safety and best practice, Dr Kalk has a few clear requirements. Patients must be open to in-person appointments when necessary. They must also agree to professional communication between Dr Kalk and their GP or care team. Furthermore, patients should identify a reliable contact person to involve in their care when needed.
These steps ensure collaborative and effective treatment.
