Dr Rafik Refaat Consultant Psychiatrist London brings over 25 years of dedicated experience to the care of children and adolescents. As a medical doctor, not a psychologist, he specialises in diagnosing and treating a wide range of emotional, behavioural, and psychological issues in young people. With a compassionate approach and clinical precision, Dr Rafik provides expert psychiatric care tailored to each individual child’s needs.
Dr Rafik earned his medical degree in 1984. He then trained in general psychiatry at Charing Cross and Imperial College. His dedication led to an academic appointment as Lecturer in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UCL, Royal Free, and Great Ormond Street Hospitals. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London (FRCPsych), a recognition of his clinical excellence and leadership.
Currently, Dr Rafik serves as the Director of ICL Clinic and runs a leading inpatient unit. This unit holds an “Excellent” accreditation from the Royal College of Psychiatrists and an “Outstanding” rating from the CQC. He also holds the role of Training Programme Director for the Higher Training Scheme in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Great Ormond Street and Royal London Hospitals.
In every assessment, Dr Rafik focuses on clarity of diagnosis and treatment planning. He conducts thorough evaluations in a structured, conversational style. His collaborative approach ensures families and referring doctors receive clear, written reports. If therapy is required, he refers to skilled clinical psychologists or psychotherapists. When medication is appropriate, Dr Rafik manages it directly, often in coordination with the patient’s GP or paediatrician.
Dr Rafik treats patients under 18 with a wide range of issues, including:
Depression, anxiety, and self-harm
ADHD and behavioural concerns
Eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder
Autism spectrum and social interaction difficulties
Tourette’s syndrome and tic disorders
Psychotic symptoms and neuropsychiatric conditions
He also supports teenagers with complex or rare diagnoses, including bipolar disorder.
In addition to his medical credentials, Dr Rafik holds a postgraduate degree in Family and Couple Therapy from the Institute of Family Therapy in London. He is also trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT), and Systemic Therapy. This diverse skill set allows him to tailor care using a multidisciplinary, holistic framework.
Having worked across cultures and healthcare systems, Dr Rafik Refaat Consultant Psychiatrist London brings not only clinical expertise but also cultural sensitivity. He understands the importance of listening to both the child and the parent to gain a complete picture. His goal is always to identify the core problem and deliver practical, effective solutions.
