Dr Tony Branson Consultant Clinical Oncologist Newcastle brings decades of expertise to the Northern Centre for Cancer Care. He serves as a leading figure in breast cancer treatment at Freeman Hospital. Dr Branson trained at Trinity College, Cambridge, and completed his medical studies at Charing Cross Hospital in London. Subsequently, he advanced his oncology training at the renowned Hammersmith Hospital. In 1985, he moved to the North East, and by 1988, he became a Consultant Clinical Oncologist. Throughout his journey, he has remained deeply committed to innovation and patient-focused care.
During his tenure as clinical director from 2004 to 2010, Dr Branson led the transformation of cancer services in Newcastle. This crucial period saw the relocation of services to the newly established Northern Centre for Cancer Care at Freeman Hospital. Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in shaping cancer care standards across the region.
Dr Branson’s dedication goes beyond hospital walls. He collaborated with the North of England Cancer Network since its launch, and from 2005 to 2011, chaired the network’s radiotherapy group. Because of his unwavering focus and leadership, regional radiotherapy protocols improved significantly. In 2012, he took on the role of medical director for the cancer network, further influencing healthcare delivery.
Research plays a central role in Dr Branson’s professional life. As the local Principal Investigator, he oversees several national clinical trials. His participation helps patients access innovative treatments while advancing the future of cancer care. Not only does he manage ongoing studies, but he also actively promotes research collaborations within the wider medical community.
