Ethan Sen Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist Newcastle provides expert care and innovative research in paediatric rheumatology at the Great North Children’s Hospital. Dr Ethan Sen leads clinical services with dedication and deep expertise. After completing undergraduate studies at the University of Oxford, he trained extensively in general paediatrics and paediatric rheumatology across multiple respected centres.
Dr Sen’s training took place in prestigious locations, including the Severn Deanery, Christchurch in New Zealand, Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, and the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath. He joined the Great North Children’s Hospital as a consultant in May 2018. Since then, he has continued to expand his clinical and research experience.
Significantly, Dr Sen received the Barbara Ansell Fellowship in Paediatric Rheumatology to conduct research on lupus nephritis. He also completed a PhD at the University of Bristol under an NIHR Rare Diseases Translational Research Clinical Fellowship. Currently, he serves as a Clinical Member of the UK Paediatric Rheumatology Clinical Studies Group and chairs the Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) Topic Specific Group. Dr Sen actively contributes to ongoing clinical research, which directly benefits his patients.
Dr Sen specializes in several complex paediatric rheumatology conditions. His clinical interests include juvenile idiopathic arthritis, macrophage activation syndrome, juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus, chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis, and multi-system inflammatory disease. He also leads clinics in adolescent rheumatology, juvenile dermatomyositis, juvenile scleroderma, and more. Additionally, Dr Sen places great importance on patient-centred care in both new and follow-up clinics.
Alongside clinical work, Dr Sen is an Associate Clinical Lecturer at Newcastle University. He also serves as the Consultant Lead for Child Health Undergraduate Education at the Great North Children’s Hospital. He enjoys his ongoing role in training undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, ensuring the next generation of paediatricians receive high-quality education.
