About Fran Amar

Welcome to my psychotherapy practice. Seeking help can often feel intimidating, but my goal is to provide you with a safe, supportive space where you can explore your thoughts and emotions. I am a registered Counselling Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), and I work with both adolescents and adults, assisting individuals who may be struggling with a wide range of psychological issues. Whether you’re facing difficulties adjusting to a new phase in life or dealing with a mental health condition that’s affecting your well-being, I am here to support you on your journey toward better mental health.

With extensive experience in various fields, I’ve worked with students, professionals, and individuals dealing with addictive behaviours. Before becoming a psychologist, I worked as an accredited addiction counsellor (BAPSA level III) and also within educational settings. These experiences have equipped me to offer a well-rounded approach to therapy, with a particular focus on supporting those affected by addiction and helping students navigate the pressures of the educational system. My academic research has included topics such as Eating Disorders and Epistemic Trust within the psychotherapeutic relationship, which has further deepened my understanding of the complexities of human behaviour.

Services Offered

Individual Psychotherapy

I offer individual psychotherapy for adults experiencing a wide variety of personal concerns. Psychotherapy is not solely for those with diagnosable mental health conditions; it is also beneficial for mental health maintenance and early intervention. We often wait until a problem becomes overwhelming before seeking help, but just as we would address a punctured tyre before it deflates completely, addressing mental health concerns early on can help prevent them from escalating.

Therapy can be conducted in my practice in Camps Bay or online, offering flexibility to meet your needs. I work with individuals facing a range of challenges, including but not limited to:

  • Depression: Helping individuals manage feelings of sadness and hopelessness.
  • Anxiety: Offering support for those struggling with overwhelming worry, panic, or fear.
  • ADHD: Assisting with managing attention and hyperactivity-related difficulties.
  • Self-harm: Supporting individuals in addressing and understanding harmful behaviours.
  • Substance Abuse: Providing guidance for those battling addiction and its effects.
  • Eating Disorders: Offering therapy for both eating disorders and disordered eating behaviours.
  • Adjustment to Life Changes: Helping individuals adapt to significant life transitions, such as chronic illness diagnoses or relationship changes.
  • Support for the LGBTQIA+ community: Providing affirming care for individuals navigating identity and relationship concerns.
  • Personal Growth and Development: Assisting individuals in their journey of self-discovery and improvement.
  • Relationship Difficulties: Addressing issues in interpersonal relationships, including communication and conflict resolution.
  • Personality Disorders: Offering therapy to help individuals manage and understand personality traits that may affect their lives.

Therapeutic Approach

My approach is integrative, underpinned by psychodynamic theories, particularly object-relations and attachment theory. I combine these with techniques from other therapeutic modalities, such as Mentalization-Based Therapy and Motivational Interviewing, to tailor my approach to each individual’s needs. I place significant emphasis on the co-creation of the therapeutic relationship, where the bond between therapist and client is central to the therapeutic work. Through this relationship, we can explore complex emotions and unspoken thoughts, allowing for deep insights and meaningful change.
