I’m Gareth Hughes, a qualified Counsellor and Psychotherapist based in Cardiff. My career in therapy began after I spent several years working with young athletes to enhance their cricket skills. In this role, I helped players address personal challenges and foster a positive approach to overcoming difficulties. This experience sparked my interest in personal development, leading me to a career in counselling.
I hold a Master’s Degree in Sports Development and Coaching, and my experience as a coach at both Regional and National levels in Wales allowed me to witness firsthand the power of personal growth. My desire to support others in their journey led me to pursue teaching, obtaining a PGCE from the University of Wales in Newport.
In 2012, I began working at NIACE Cymru, where I inspired adults to build confidence and develop personal skills to re-enter education or employment. This role allowed me to focus on Diversity and Inclusion, where I worked with individuals to challenge discrimination in the workplace.
While working in Diversity and Inclusion, I started my counselling studies and have continued to develop my knowledge in the field. I am currently working towards a Post Graduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling at the University of South Wales.
As a member of both the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS), I follow the ethical frameworks set out by these organisations. I am fully insured, and my DBS certificate is up to date and available upon request.
I offer a range of counselling services to meet the needs of individuals and couples. My practice is integrative, combining multiple therapeutic approaches to tailor each session to the unique needs of my clients. Whether you are seeking support for personal issues, relationship concerns, or workplace challenges, I am here to help.
I work with clients on a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, and life transitions. Through a compassionate, empathetic approach, I create a safe space for individuals to explore their challenges and work towards solutions. My aim is to help you gain insight and develop strategies to improve your mental health and well-being.
In couples therapy, I support partners in navigating conflicts, improving communication, and deepening emotional connection. Relationship difficulties can be complex, but with the right tools and support, couples can develop stronger, more harmonious partnerships. I offer a collaborative approach to help both partners understand each other better and resolve conflicts constructively.
Drawing from my experience in Diversity and Inclusion, I also offer counselling to those facing discrimination in the workplace or other areas of their lives. I work with clients to help them challenge unfair treatment and provide guidance on how to advocate for themselves in challenging environments.
I am committed to ongoing professional development, which is why I am pursuing further studies in Integrative Counselling at the University of South Wales. This continuous learning ensures that my practice stays current with the latest therapeutic techniques and research, benefiting my clients.
I adhere strictly to the ethical guidelines of the BACP and NCPS to maintain the highest standards of professionalism. My practice is based on a foundation of trust, respect, and confidentiality. I am dedicated to providing a supportive environment where clients feel safe and valued.
I aim to offer a safe, confidential, and non-judgemental space where clients can express themselves freely and work through their issues. Whether you’re facing personal struggles or relationship challenges, I am here to guide you towards lasting change and healing.
If you’re ready to take the first step in your therapeutic journey, please get in touch to schedule an initial consultation. I look forward to supporting you in your journey towards emotional and mental well-being.
