Guy McGowan Consultant Cardiologist Newcastle leads in delivering specialised care for heart failure, transplantation, and pulmonary hypertension. He currently serves at the renowned Freeman Hospital, known for pioneering cardiology services across the UK.
Dr Guy McGowan graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1986. After his foundational training in Dublin, he pursued a prestigious research fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA. Additionally, he completed a Clinical Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. These international experiences shaped his career, allowing him to bring world-class expertise back to Newcastle.
In 1997, Dr McGowan was appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh within the Section of Heart Failure and Transplantation. His work there placed him at the forefront of innovations in heart failure management. Then, in 2004, he joined Freeman Hospital, where he continues to lead in advanced heart failure, ventricular assist devices, and heart transplantation.
Not only is Dr McGowan a respected clinician, but he also holds an Honorary Readership in Heart Failure at Newcastle University. His academic contributions are substantial, with over 70 peer-reviewed publications to his name. Furthermore, he has secured research funding from top institutions, including the British Heart Foundation, Heart Research UK, the American Heart Association, the Irish Heart Foundation, and the US National Institutes of Health.
