Henrietta Bowden-Jones Consultant Psychiatrist London leads the field of addiction psychiatry with unmatched dedication. She combines clinical excellence, academic leadership, and public service to transform mental health care in the UK.
Henrietta began her journey with a medical degree, later earning a Doctorate in Medicine from Imperial College. Her research focused on early relapse indicators in alcohol dependency. She also obtained a CCST in addiction psychiatry and built a dual career in treatment and neuroscience.
In 2008, she founded the National Problem Gambling Clinic, the UK’s first NHS clinic for gambling disorders. In 2019, she established the National Centre for Gaming Disorders under the NHS Long Term Plan. Both clinics continue to help patients every day.
Henrietta became the UK’s first National Clinical Advisor on Gambling Harms in 2022. She also advises Westminster and the House of Lords on gaming, gambling, and mental health. Because of her deep expertise, she helps shape national addiction policies.
She represents the Royal College of Psychiatrists as a spokesperson on behavioural addictions. Her voice also influences the British Medical Association, where she served on the Board of Science (2021–2024).
In 2019, she received an OBE for Services to Addiction Treatment and Research. A year later, she earned the title Psychiatrist of the Year from the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Between 2018 and 2022, she served as President of both the Medical Women’s Federation and the Psychiatry Section of the Royal Society of Medicine.
These achievements highlight her continued excellence.
Henrietta holds several academic positions. She is an Honorary Professor at UCL and a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at Cambridge. In 2024, she was elected a Fellow of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. She also serves as Vice President of the Royal Society of Medicine from 2022 to 2025.
Her work bridges clinical practice and academic research.
Henrietta joined the World Health Organization’s Advisory Board on Gaming Disorders. She also sits on the Executive Board of the International Society for the Study of Behavioural Addictions.
In 2024, The Crown appointed her as Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London. She now supports the Lord Lieutenant in Kensington and Chelsea.
She co-founded the National UK Research Network for Behavioural Addictions. The network brings together researchers from Cambridge, Southampton, and other major universities.
