Joe Guadagno Consultant Neurologist Newcastle leads cutting-edge care and research in multiple sclerosis and white matter disease. With years of training and clinical experience, he combines expertise with a patient-focused approach. Dr Guadagno actively participates in clinical trials and develops innovative research in neurology.
Dr Guadagno completed his undergraduate medical training at Glasgow University. During this time, he earned a BSc (Hons) in Neuroscience. Then, he trained in neurology at Royal Perth Hospital, Australia. Afterward, he returned to the UK to pursue a PhD at Cambridge University. There, he studied brain metabolism and blood flow changes in ischaemia. He used advanced MRI and PET imaging techniques for his research.
Following his PhD, Dr Guadagno completed clinical neurology training in Newcastle. Then, he undertook a Multiple Sclerosis Fellowship at the VU Medical Centre in Amsterdam. Under Professors Chris Polman and Fred Barkof, he gained deep expertise in managing complex MS cases. These experiences shaped his patient care philosophy and research focus.
Dr Guadagno joined the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle as a Consultant Neurologist and Honorary Clinical Lecturer in December 2009. He actively leads MS clinical trials and contributes to groundbreaking research. Additionally, he explores new avenues for understanding white matter disease. His work directly benefits patients and advances the neurology field.
