Jon Barclay Consultant Urologist Newcastle graduated from Newcastle University Medical School with merit in 2009. Since then, he has built a strong foundation through rigorous training and practical experience. Initially, he undertook foundation training in Newcastle Upon Tyne and core surgery training in North Yorkshire. In 2015, Jon joined the higher surgical training programme in Urology in the North East. By 2020, he earned his FRCS (Urol), and in 2021, he achieved his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).
After his CCT, Jon was appointed Consultant Urologist at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. There, he specialized in functional, neurological, and reconstructive urology. Notably, he managed patients with congenital and acquired spinal cord injuries through the Golden Jubilee Spinal Injuries Unit. Moreover, Jon led undergraduate education for Urology, coordinating training, teaching programs, and student electives. Additionally, he mentored numerous 4th and 5th-year medical students, supporting their clinical and academic growth.
Jon’s dedication to innovation led him to revive the Sacral Neuromodulation programme at James Cook University Hospital. This initiative introduced new treatment options for bladder dysfunction and neurological urinary conditions previously unavailable in the region. In November 2022, Jon joined the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, continuing his focus on functional and reconstructive urology. His commitment ensures that patients receive cutting-edge, comprehensive care.
Jon Barclay Consultant Urologist Newcastle holds special interests in benign urological diseases, including urinary tract infections, urinary incontinence, urinary tract reconstruction, and andrology. Importantly, he is preparing to undertake a mentored training program in robotic-assisted reconstructive techniques. This will allow him to offer minimally invasive options for benign urinary tract reconstruction. Furthermore, Jon remains passionate about medical education and aims to continue his involvement in both undergraduate and postgraduate training.
Jon has contributed to urological research, notably on non-antibiotic treatments for recurrent urinary tract infections in women. His work has been published in the BMJ, highlighting his commitment to advancing patient care through evidence-based medicine.
