Description

Judy Grant Clinical Psychologist – Claremont, Cape Town

About Me

I am a Clinical Psychologist located in Claremont, Cape Town, with over 30 years of experience. My academic journey began in the 1980s when I graduated from the University of Johannesburg with a BA in English and Psychology. During this time, I volunteered as a counsellor at an organisation that supported women and children affected by domestic violence.

After moving to the United Kingdom, I continued my studies and professional work. I attended courses at the London School of Counselling and Therapy and the London School of Economics. I also conducted research for a psychoanalytic training organisation. This period was both enriching and formative, and it was there I met my lifelong partner.

We later moved back to Cape Town, where I completed my Masters in Clinical Psychology at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2001. During my studies, I developed a deeper passion for psychology, particularly focusing on how the self develops within the context of relationships.

My Professional Approach

I work within the framework of post-modern relational theory, which integrates insights from neurobiology and infant research. This theory emphasises that the mind develops through relationships from birth onwards. My primary goal is to help clients understand and gain insight into their patterns of thinking and behaviour. I aim to help individuals identify self-limiting coping strategies, emotional triggers, and relational patterns that may be impacting their well-being.

Through compassionate self-reflection, my clients can develop healthier ways of thinking, reduce feelings of shame and anxiety, and cultivate a stronger sense of self-worth. This approach leads to increased resilience, improved self-esteem, and a greater ability to manage difficult emotions. It also empowers individuals to make positive changes in their lives and relationships.

Services Offered

I offer a variety of therapeutic services to individuals, couples, and families. These include:

  • Adult Psychotherapy: I support adults dealing with a range of issues, including depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, and self-esteem concerns. The goal is to promote emotional balance and clarity.

  • Child Play Therapy: This therapy provides children with a creative outlet to express their emotions. It is particularly useful in helping children navigate difficult life events or emotional challenges.

  • Adolescent Therapy: For teenagers, therapy helps address the complex issues of identity, relationships, and family dynamics. I work closely with adolescents to guide them through this challenging developmental stage.

  • Couple Therapy: Couples therapy focuses on improving communication, resolving conflicts, and strengthening emotional bonds. I provide a safe and supportive space for partners to discuss their challenges and deepen their connection.

Educational Qualifications and Training

I hold a Masters in Clinical Psychology from the University of Cape Town, with a particular interest in child development and relationships. In addition, I have pursued further training, including a two-year Infant Observation course and a Post Graduate Certificate in Self, Intersubjective, and Relational Psychotherapy. I also trained in psychoanalytic couple psychotherapy.
