Karen Hey Physiotherapist Wakefield provides trusted, hands-on care in neurological and physical rehabilitation. With over 30 years of real-world experience, Karen helps people rebuild strength, balance, and confidence through clear, practical methods.
Karen earned her BSc in Physiotherapy from Queen’s College, Glasgow. Since then, she has focused on helping people with spinal injuries, strokes, and brain injuries. She currently works at Tops Fitness and Rehabilitation in Outwood, Wakefield. There, she supports people with both recent and long-term injuries.
Because each person is different, Karen always tailors her treatment plans. She uses real-life tasks to help people reach goals—like walking safely or gardening again. Her clinic care is strong, but her community work is just as vital. For example, she often visits patients at home to provide support that fits their daily lives.
Karen believes that rehab should make sense in everyday life. Therefore, she helps patients move through real tasks, not just exercises. Whether it’s standing up from a chair, walking on grass, or picking up a watering can, each action has a purpose.
In the community, she treats people recovering from strokes, surgeries, or injuries that affect balance. Since care happens in familiar surroundings, it often leads to faster progress and greater confidence.
Karen began her career in 1990 at Newcastle General Hospital. After gaining wide experience in acute neurology, she traveled for a year in Australia. Once home, she returned to Wakefield to work at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. There, she held senior roles and worked in many settings—from wards to rehab units and outpatients.
As her career grew, so did her skills. She treated patients with many conditions, including stroke, Guillain-Barré Syndrome, and multiple sclerosis. She also learned methods like Bobath and Carr and Shepherd, which she now blends with her own hands-on approach.
In 2012, Karen became a Physiotherapy Team Leader. She worked hard to improve care and guide her team. After a service restructure, she stepped into a new role leading a team of physios and occupational therapists. Together, they changed the way care was delivered—working as one team, not in separate roles.
In 2017, Karen chose to return to full-time clinical care. This allowed her to sharpen her skills and focus fully on patients again. Since then, she has worked at Roundwood Clinic in Barnsley and at the Stocksbridge Brain Injury Centre in Sheffield.
Karen takes part in regular training and workshops. She has completed courses in Bobath, splinting, and motor learning. She also attended the PD Warrior program, which focuses on active rehab for Parkinson’s and other neurological conditions. Because she’s part of Yorkshire ACPIN, she stays up to date with the latest practices in neurological care.
