Leigh Davies General Surgeon Cardiff brings a wealth of surgical expertise to the people of Wales and beyond. He trained in medicine at the University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff, graduating in 1997. His postgraduate surgical journey included time in Surrey, London, Hampshire, and South Wales. Additionally, he completed specialist fellowships in Advanced Pelvic Oncology and Cytoreductive Surgery.
As a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon since 2013, he currently works across the University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough. Furthermore, he actively serves as a regular Army Officer. This dual commitment has shaped a dynamic clinical career, both within the NHS and in military operational environments globally.
His practice covers both elective and emergency procedures in General and Colorectal Surgery. In addition, he handles complex trauma cases. At University Hospital of Wales, he trains future surgical professionals, focusing on emergency and trauma surgery. As the General Surgery Trauma Lead, he ensures that training stays hands-on, up-to-date, and high quality.
Moreover, he holds the role of Clinical Lead for the Poly Trauma Unit, forming part of the Major Trauma Centre. His leadership extends to the entire South, West, and Mid Wales regions as the Clinical Governance Lead for the South Wales Trauma Network.
Dr. Davies’ research spans both basic science and clinical outcomes. Initially, his work explored the genetic features of colorectal cancer and lymphangiogenesis. Currently, his interests include elective surgery outcomes, emergency surgery improvements, and trauma care evolution. He contributes to trials like PICCOS (PIPAC), ADD-Aspirin, and studies focusing on surgical safety and quality.
Consequently, his work not only enhances clinical knowledge but also improves real-world patient outcomes. Moreover, he integrates research with daily practice, ensuring evidence-based care.
Although his work keeps him busy, Leigh stays deeply connected to his West Wales roots. He lives in Cardiff with his wife and three children. Together, they spend their free time outdoors—caving, mountain climbing, and biking. Likewise, he’s a passionate rugby supporter, backing Scarlets, Rhiwbina RFC, and the national Welsh team.
In addition, he serves as Senior Doctor for the South and Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team, providing vital care in challenging underground environments.
