Lesley Kay Consultant Rheumatologist Newcastle leads with extensive experience and dedication. Dr Lesley Kay specialises in Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Arthritis related to inflammatory bowel disease, and Rheumatoid Arthritis. She works at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital, where she delivers expert diagnosis and tailored treatment plans. Patients benefit from her deep knowledge and compassionate care.
Dr Kay qualified in medicine from Oxford University in 1990. Afterward, she trained in medicine and rheumatology across the North East of England. Additionally, she completed public health training in Newcastle and Cambridge. This strong foundation shapes her approach to patient care and clinical leadership.
Since 2000, Dr Kay has served as a consultant rheumatologist at the Freeman Hospital. Her leadership roles include Head of Service for Rheumatology from 2006 to 2013. Furthermore, she was Clinical Director for Musculoskeletal Services between 2007 and 2012. These positions reflect her commitment to improving rheumatology services and patient outcomes in the region.
Dr Kay actively engages in research to enhance patient care. Her interests focus on education, biologic drug use, quality improvement, and patient safety. She contributed to the British Society for Rheumatology Biologics Register for Ankylosing Spondylitis starting in 2012. Previously, she played a similar role for the BSR Biologics Register for Rheumatoid Arthritis from 2000 to 2006. These roles underline her dedication to advancing rheumatology knowledge.
Moreover, she serves on the British Society for Rheumatology’s Clinical Affairs Committee and Arthritis Research UK’s Clinical Studies Group for Spondyloarthritis. Dr Kay also advises the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society, earning a “HealthCare Champion” award for her outstanding support. Currently, she acts as the National Clinical Lead for Rheumatology within the NHS Improvement’s ‘Getting It Right First Time’ programme. These positions allow her to influence care standards nationwide.
At Freeman Hospital, Dr Kay runs the regional specialist clinic for resistant Ankylosing Spondylitis and Psoriatic Arthritis. She collaborates closely with Dr Ben Thompson and nurse specialist Michelle Rutherford. Together, they provide comprehensive care that integrates expertise from dermatology and gastroenterology. This multidisciplinary approach ensures patients receive holistic treatment for complex conditions.
