Liam Cookson – Orthotist Focused on Paediatrics and Modern Technologies

About Liam Cookson

Liam Cookson is a skilled orthotist with a strong background in paediatric care and a passion for modern orthotic solutions. He began his career at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, where he focused on treating a wide range of childhood conditions. These included deformational plagiocephaly, hip dysplasia, and cerebral palsy. During this time, he worked closely with families to provide tailored orthotic care that supported better outcomes for young patients.

After gaining experience in Melbourne, Liam moved to the UK for a year and a half. There, he worked as a locum orthotist, treating both adults and children. This role gave him insight into different approaches to casting, fitting, and fabrication. He learned new methods that improved how he works with patients and how he designs orthotic devices.

In 2014, Liam returned to Melbourne and joined OAPL. Since then, he has continued to grow his expertise across several areas. These include paediatrics, diabetic foot care, and fracture management in adults. He is also passionate about using new technologies, particularly cranial remodelling helmets such as STARband.

Services Offered

Liam provides a wide range of orthotic services for both children and adults. His main areas of focus include:

  • Paediatric Orthotics: Liam treats children with conditions such as cerebral palsy, hip dysplasia, and plagiocephaly. He works closely with families to ensure each device is safe, effective, and comfortable.

  • Cranial Remodelling Helmets: He specialises in STARband helmets for babies with flat head syndrome. These helmets guide gentle, natural head shape correction.

  • Diabetic Foot Care: Liam designs orthotics that reduce pressure on the feet, improve support, and help prevent foot ulcers or injuries in diabetic patients.

  • Fracture Support for Adults: He creates braces that help stabilise fractures and support the healing process.

  • Custom Orthotic Devices: Every orthosis is built around each person’s goals, body type, and activity needs, using a mix of Australian and international techniques.

Additional Information

Liam values clear communication and teamwork. He partners with clients, their families, and other health professionals to create simple and practical care plans. He also keeps up to date with new research and tools that improve treatment results.

Whether working with a baby who needs a cranial helmet or an adult healing from a fracture, Liam stays focused on helping each person move better. With a calm and professional approach, he delivers care that supports progress, comfort, and independence.
